Guided Tour of Weaste Cemetery

The Friends of Salford Cemeteries Trust in partnership with Salford’s Museum Service, held a successful and enjoyable guided tour of Weaste Cemetery, on Sunday 23rd September 2007. Some 75 people heard Laylah Pyke giving brief biographies of some of the noteworthy citizens buried there.

1. Charles Halle – founder of Manchester’s famous Halle Orchestra.

2. William Norman VC – hero of the Crimean War.

3. Wright Turner – cotton mill owner and Mayor of Salford in 1864.

4. Joseph Brotherton – Salford’s first Member of Parliament.

5. Laylah Pyke – tour guide.

6. James Cameron – survivor of the Charge of the Light Brigade.

7. Samuel Hill Derby – the Salford Poisoner.

8. Frederick Hampson – Glass Manufacturer and Mayor of Salford 1920.

9. William Healey KSG – Builder employing 400 men and 40 boys.

10. Father Salvatore Carruccio – Priest of nearby All Souls RC Church.
